Why Doesn't Someone Just Make a Rules-Light Pathfinder, BECMI-Style, Using The OGL?

Pathfinder already put out their Basic Boxed Set.  The general concensus, like, everywhere, is that Pathfinder is doing a great job, keep on the current course, people are happy, D&D Next may take a bit out of you at first, but like all things designed to cater to everyone it will likely please no one, and fizzle out, and 6e will be out in a couple years anyhow.  So all Pathfinder has to do is survive the RPG war of attrition they are in, which they are positioned to do easily.

The only complaint/wish I ever hear about the game from both people who play PF, and people who don't but might if this wish is fulfilled, is that they create a rules light version.  They already started down this road with their Basic set.  All they need to do is expand upon it with a couple more, in the same spirit of BECMI.  They refuse to do it though.

Why doesn't someone just do this themselves using the OGL?  I think they are able to, right?  Of course, don't call it Pathfinder, but everyone will know what it is.  Seems like a no-brainer, right?  Who knows, if it's successful, you might even get an official one from Paizo.

Seems like a huge untapped market/opportunity just waiting to be exploited, but what the fuck do I know.  I still think damn near everything +James Raggi does is nuts, yet he keeps making money at it.  Shit, what a show-stealer it would be if Paizo did it to coincide with the release of Next at Gencon in 2014.  :)

They are coming out with a hardcover "Strategy Guide" whose intent is to gateway people from the Beginner Box to full Pathfinder. I'm split on that... On the one hand, I live the BECMI but in BECMI the CMI part kinda sucked, went downhill substantially, the BE part was really the money shot. Great adventures, consumable rules.

I'm not super overwhelmed with the beginner box, feel like it's not quite beginnery enough, but I would also like to see... BEC maybe, Pathfinder version. B: 1-3, E: 4-9, C: 10-20.

Wouldn't what you're describing actually be a "Rules-Light D&D 3.5, BECMI-Style, Using The OGL?"

After all, Pathfinder is fundamentally just 3.5 with some tweaks.

My experience with Pathfinder player's is that they really like all the diversity and special rules of the character classes and builds.

That seems to be where the majority of the rules for the system lie, and not in the resolution mechanics, which are just D&D 3.5. That has plenty of starter sets.

Blood & Tresure is sort of that. OSR style D&D but keeping almost all of 3.xs conventions.

I've heard someone claim that wotc said if 5e isn't a success they'll stop making RPGs...

Basic Fantasy RPG seemed to hit all the right buttons for my buddies who didn't really like LL, S&W, etc...

What you're talking about exists, it's called Microlite20. Three attributes, four skills and only 4 or 5 classes (I forget exactly) and all using the d20s and other OGL mechanics. It's a pretty cool little game, and I love the way it handles magic (lose hp to cast spells instead of slots). Might be too "rules lite" for some/many though. I haven't played it but it's a good read on how to distill a system to essentials.

There is also Microlite 74, which is a D20 system, but with D&D basics/1ed type of play. Many races and classes to play but with minimal rules. I like how the game rules only are 7-8 pages. You can go beyond and get more optional rules if you want. link : http://www.retroroleplaying.com/content/microlite74

If Raggi was making money, he wouldn't be Kickstarting for more money to ship product.

I made what you are talking about. It was called Back to the Dungeon RPG. It was a very rough draft but people seemed to have very little interest.

BTW it's free to download and print out for personal use.

Once I initially commented I clicked the -Notify me when new feedback are added- check box and now every time a remark is added I get four emails with the same comment. Is there any method you can remove me from that service? Thanks!
